Happy Chinese New Year 2022
Happy New Year from all of us at Coohom. Here at our Shanghai headquarters, we’ve just finished ringing in the Year of the Tiger with the traditional Chinese new year celebrations. Whether you’re familiar with these, celebrate them yourself, or have never experienced a Chinese New Year before, we thought we’d take a moment to share some of the customs we took part in earlier this month.
Being in the design business, we understand the value of home as a place for family to gather together and enjoy one another’s company. And our family has grown significantly, kicking off the new year with our highest number of average weekly users (over 30,000) to date!
Chinese New Year gives us some unique ways to celebrate family. Here are just a few we’ve participated in recently:
Gift-giving is an important tradition in family gatherings all over the world. One of the most common gifts for Chinese New Year is the 红包 (hóngbāo), a fancy red envelope with cash inside! The red envelopes are often emblazoned with well-wishes, and contain crisp new bills of different denominations. Different amounts carry different meanings, so make sure to study up if you plan on giving out some red envelopes. Dirty old bills straight out of your wallet are not acceptable!

No matter the size or design of your kitchen, it’s going to be put to maximum use if you plan on hosting a Chinese New Year Gathering. A multitude of dishes, drinks, and snacks comprise a typical Chinese New Year’s feast, and the hosts put in many hours of work to create a perfect event. If you find yourself at such a gathering in the future, don’t forget to leave a little fish left over on the plate; it’s a custom meant to ensure plenty in the new year.
